Tikal's Great Plaza

Picture
The Great Plaza and its surroundings constituted the core of Tikal.  Technically the Great Plaza consists of Temples 1 & 2 and the ball court, which were dramatic additions built around the year 700 A.D. between the Central and the North Acropolises.

Temple I

Picture
It also is known as the Temple of the Great Jaguar because of a lintel that represents a king sitting up on a jaguar throne, another name is the Temple of Ah Cacao, for the ruler buried in the temple.

Temple II

Picture
Temple II also known as Temple of the Masks.  The climb to the top was pretty precarious but looking over the edge makes you acrophobic.

Temple IV

Picture
View from Temple IV.  Temple IV towers 212 feet above the jungle floor, making it the tallest structure in N. America  before the construction of the skyscrapers in the late 1800's.   Looking out from the top of the Temple IV, over the jungle canopy, it is possible to see the Great Plaza and Mundo Perdido in the distance.

You are looking at the location of the secret rebel base from the original Star Wars (EPISODE 4), which could only be taken from Temple IV.

Group G

Picture
Group G forms one of the largest clusters of major palace type construction known at Tikal. It is fronted by a spacious east-facing platform and has a broad entrance stairway.

Mundo Perdido

Picture
Mundo Perdido experienced periods of building and rebuilding.  It earliest structures were dated prior to 500BC, making it perhaps the original center of Tikal.
